Guest Post: A Wild Tonic

Hello, friends! We are finally here in WV, and it's sweltering.  We already hit up a thrift store (lots of great scores!) and got iced coffees--we're getting ready to head to a lake after kiddo naptime.

We are thrilled to have our friend Lauren of A Wild Tonic to the blog today! She shares our love of vintage and selling vintage and blogging!  She created a fun little collaboration while we're (sort of) away from the blog!  Lauren, you rock!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey, Miskabelle readers! It's Lauren from A Wild Tonic, and I'm here today to share what I think will be your vintage Fourth of July Outfit. The Fourth of July is one of the best holidays, in my opinion. It's a day to kick back with family and friends, eat a lot of BBQ and have a few beers, play with sparklers, and appreciate just how lucky we all are. I put together this fun little outfit from the Miskabelle and A Wild Tonic Etsy shops as an example of what I think a perfect Independence Day outfit would be. Cutoffs, a cute top, shades, sandals, and a purse..in red, white, and/or blue, of course. Whether you're celebrating this weekend, Wednesday, or next weekend, I hope you American Miskabelle readers have an awesome and safe holiday! :)

Guest Post: The Lovely Beth Ables

I am so excited to have Beth on the blog today!  We have never met, but we are true kindred spirits:  both former English teachers, bibliophiles, writers, wives, mamas, and lovers of good music.  Someday, we will have the best coffee date ever. Until then, 140 characters and some emails will have to do.

This is one of the best things I've read about loving vintage things EVER.  Beth, you are a gem.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Amanda put the call out on Twitter that she was on the lookout for a few guest bloggers while she and her sister were on vacation, I offered as soon as I saw it, though I had no idea what I’d actually write about. I write over at my blog, Tiny Bables, mostly about motherhood and my family life as it continues to evolve. So I’m thankful for a challenge, a change, and a chance to do a bit of reflecting on my love of vintage.
I feel like I should first confess that I’m not really a thrift-er. While I do enjoy a chance to rummage through a good thrift shop (in person or online) every now and again, it’s not even close to being a regular habit. I do, however, love vintage: pieces (whether a dress or a plate or a dusty book or a tiny sterling coffee spoon) with a story, with time spent elsewhere, will always hold a certain draw for me.

The more I thought about what to write here, the more I realized that my love for “old things” winds its way further back in my life than I might first-glance think. Maybe I could blame it on my interest-leaning-toward-obsession of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House books. Instead of playing house, or doctor, or school when I was little, I played pioneer: complete with calico dress, sunbonnet, and outdoor cooking demonstrations (much to my older brothers’ embarrassment). Let’s be honest, I still sort-of wish I could work at Williamsburg. Where’s my butter churn and spinning wheel??

Aside from my living-history aspirations, I loved playing dress-up.  But unlike other girls my age, my dress up box (a vintage Ivory soap crate from my dad’s first job at Proctor and Gamble) brimmed with 1950s and 60s finery from my mom’s dances and bridesmaid duties. Here’s where it gets unreal, though--because she is a mere 4’11”, and during her teens and twenties barely weighed 93 lbs, I could almost fit into her clothes! Her tiny gloves, the veiled hats, the tulle and taffeta—what crinkly, beautiful memories for me (if only I could still fit in them today).
In middle school and high school, my love of vintage explored more modern eras: my first car was a 1970 Volkswagen Superbeetle: bright red with only one owner before me—a little old lady from Pasadena (get it?), California.  I named her Eleanor for my favorite Beatles song, and could be found in my original Levi orange-tag bell-bottom jeans putt-putting to a Dave Mathews Band or Jump, Little Children show. (oh, the 90s…) Even in college, I worked at a consignment/vintage store in Forest Park Birmingham called Zoe’s. I’d wear a furry leopard-print 60s hat with my black Gap jumper without batting a glittered eyelid.
But why this love of what some might call “used,” or “worn out”? Even my home today is filled with new-only-to-us and not brand-spanking things. I can count only three pieces of furniture in our entire house that we purchased new (and one’s a Target sale ottoman, the other a couch from a discount warehouse). We decorate with old typewriters, cracked-spine books, lost-and-then-found-by-us treasures…every nook holds stories.  Even my son’s favorite toys are ones that our parents have pulled from their attics from our old toy chests. While some of this has to do with the fact that we are both teachers and don’t have the finances to buy a new living room set or re-do our bathroom, I don’t think we’d have it any other way—even if we could afford it.
And here’s the quiet revelation I’ve had through thinking and writing this out: I love vintage because I relate to it. Vintage is not perfect, but it’s unique—it has character and is celebrated for its patina, its experience. Vintage does not look quite like anything else, it’s not on-trend—it is its own trend. Vintage has a history that is not ignored, but is one that becomes part of the item. It’s a little out-of-the-box, and those that celebrate “old things” appreciate that.
I know I certainly do. I’ll take a story over shiny any day.

Outfit Post: Sailor Style

With my love of everything pinup comes a great love for anything nautical. Red, white and navy, stripes, anchors, ropes--they all look great with my red lipstick. :)

I bought this dress on major sale, as a beach coverup for vacations ahead (TWO MORE DAYS!!!), but on this particularly steamy day, I decided to wear it, paired with bright red accessories.

Outfit details: striped tank dress-Old Navy, rope belt-vintage, bracelet-Banana Republic (old), shoes-vintage

The picture above is a goofy one of me and my handsome photographer (who just clicks when I tell him and has no real photography experience!). He always tries to make me laugh, which helps me to relax and look a little less stilted--I think. But we rarely have pictures together, which stinks! Hoping to get some family shots this weekend while we're on our family vacation. We are heading to Berkeley Springs, WV for swimming, shopping, art galleries, hot springs, hiking, and chilling out with our family for 4 days. I cannot WAIT!

We have some great guest posts coming your way in the next two days, which we're also very excited about! :)

See you soon! We'll be the ones with tons of pictures and hopefully a sunny, relaxed glow. (I know actual tanning is bad, but damn, I am ghosty in these pics!)

Outfit Post: Location Location Location

So, admittedly, the backdrop of this outfit post is way more exciting than the outfit itself.  Every time I pass by this mural in our local downtown area I make a mental note to take photos in front of it.  But I'm not a huge fan of having my photo taken in public places so I was waiting till a quiet week in town (a college town that is usually busy with students all over the place, walking into moving traffic with iPhones glued to their ears/thumbs).  Sunday morning we were up early and went to get our Starbucks on.  I grabbed my camera on the way out the door in hopes of a photo op in front of the mural.  I think it may have been freshman move-in weekend because there were a lot of cars, but luckily they stayed contained on campus so downtown was pretty empty, including the alley where this mural is painted.  I can now check this off my list of places to take outfit photos!  (Excuse my squinty/sleepy eyes and messy hair....this seems to be a recurring look in my life lately.)

chambray top:  vintage, skirt:  Target, sneakers: Vans, bag:  Lucky Brand,
mismatched earrings brought to you by 1992... ; )

I admit I snagged the idea for the knotted top and high waist skirt pairing from Amanda (thanks sis)!  Have you tried this look?  If so, we'd love to see--link to it in the comments!

Shop Preview: Sister Dresses

I have seen other vintage sellers mention the joys of finding "sister dresses" in their thrifting and buying escapades.  Sister dresses are dresses that are clearly related, probably the same size (or brand), and look like...well...sisters.  I had my first sister find last week.  I like to think of them as fraternal twins:

May I introduce the wonder that is the Sears Zip and Dash dress?? Hailing from the late 60s on, these zipper up dresses were typically for older women and moms--just zip them up and dash out the door or into whatever you were doing (raising kids, cooking dinner for your husband, etc.).  In their time, they were basically a housedress--not exactly the height of fashion.  However, I love the plaid patterns and the tie belt and large pockets! And they come in some larger sizes as well (these two, I believe, are a vintage 20 or 22, more like a 16/18 modern).

In fact, I love these dresses so much because I own one!  And I have to admit, it's my go-to, hot day "zip and dash" outfit! I style it up a little bit:  fold up the sleeves, leave the zipper at a low-but-tasteful height, and cinch that waist in tight:

These images are from last summer, visiting North Carolina and my dear friend, Jess! (pardon the quality, but this was in the days before DSLR! and ahhhh, look how tiny Aurora is!) My dress is in awesome shades of red, gray and blue.  Thezip and dashes are also lightweight cotton/poly blends, I believe, so they keep you cool too (and don't get super wrinkly!).

These two sisters will be coming to the shop later this week! They are both new/vintage with tags. If you're interested, just drop us an email!

Also, did you notice some of the updates to the blog??? Jayme and I have been working hard, not only on the design updates, but on bringing you quality, original content.  :)

Modern Vintage: Pool Party

modern vintage hanger logo

Swimming isn't my all time favorite activity, but the cute outfits you can wear are a good excuse to spend some time by the water!  I love the idea of accessorizing a bathing suit (perfect for those of us who tend to stay out of the water anyway).  Here are four decade-inspired looks that will have you stylin' at that upcoming pool party.  Each piece is under $50!

1920's/1930's

1950's

1970's

1980's

These looks have me hoping for some pool time in my near future!

Celebrity Looks for Less: Prints

celeb looks banner

Prints can be hard to pull off but when done right, they make a great statement.  Here are three celebrity looks, featuring prints, and their Miskabelle Vintage counterparts.

Beyonce:
Our version is in muted tones with a pop of extra color in the shoe (vs. Beyonce's colorful outfit with neutral shoe).  Cuff the sleeves of the blouse to make it look extra cool.

Rose Byrne:
The similarities in these dresses are uncanny (and we're guessing our version is about 1/10th of the cost)!  Pair with a shiny clutch for evening and closed toe heels.

Zoe Saldana:
This is an easy look to pull off--a pretty, printed maxi skirt and a breezy blouse.  Throw on a cross body bag and you're ready to get your morning coffee and run errands in a comfortable but stylish outfit.

All Miskabelle pieces are for sale in the shop now, along with some other lovely stuff that would perfect for a vacation wardrobe!

Outfit Post: Impromptu

So, these aren't super traditional outfit post, posed photos.  I didn't originally intend to post them as such.  But I did like this outfit and I wore it thrifting (and to the park, obviously) so I thought it was suiting to show them here.  Summer for me means lots of basics.  I told myself I would stop buying these plain, ribbed tanks but I just can't quit them.  I love the fit and I love that I don't have to put much thought into the rest of the outfit....just add some accessories (which is the fun part of getting dressed, for me!) and you're good to go.  I've had this hat for quite a while and I think I've worn it twice.  But this particular day my greasy hair was calling out to be covered so I threw it on.

hat:  H&M (men's), tank top: Target, skirt: Ross,
shoes: Deena and Ozzy (via discount store), belt:  H&M, bracelets: vintage

Looks like it is going to be a HOT day again here in PA.  So I'm off to play in the baby pool with the little lady in the photos with me.  ; )

Shop the Look: Vintage Beach Babe

Jayme and I are quite excited about a long weekend getaway with our family later this month.  Traditionally, our family has spent many summers together at the beach, but this summer, with two walking, talking toddlers on our hands, we're trying something a little different (even though there will be some beach time involved) by taking a little trip to West Virginia for hot springs, art galleries, hiking, biking, etc.  At the end of the summer, Q and I and the girls have our yearly family beach trip to Cape May--even though it seems so far away, I am already dreaming of morning breakfast bike rides, books on the beach, naps, and catching some rays.

The shop is stocked with some very cute beach-appropriate clothing and accessories at amazing prices. I put together this look for a day at the beach, from day to night.

With Fourth of July being our next big holiday, I went with a color palette of red, white and blue with neutral accents. For day, throw on the gingham shirt dress over your bathing suit, slip on some red flat sandals, fill up your tote with snacks, magazines, your iPod, a good book, and some sunscreen, and don't forget your hat!  After a day in the sun, slip out of your suit and into this gorgeous bohemian floral sundress and bring along a beachy, oversized clutch for all your necessities. Dust the sand off your red sandals, and you're ready to go (seafood, perhaps?).

Outfit Post: Art-o-Matic

After an amazing weekend, it sure is hard to come back to "work."  The rainy skies make it a little easier, though, as though the Universe is crying with me.

What made this an amazing weekend, besides the weather?  An awesome Father's Day, celebrating the best dad EVER(!), and a Crooked Hearts performance at Art-o-Matic.  It was our biggest performance to date, and we had an incredible time! So many family members and friends came to support us, and the sound was awesome.  And best of all, my outfit was awesome, if I do say so myself:

Outfit details:  dress-Betsey Johnson (thrifted!!!), purse-vintage, sandals-Blowfish

I did my own hair and makeup, and was so pleased with how it turned out that I had to take gratuitous photo (you can follow me on Instagram @mandamiska for more of-the-moment photos, etc.!).
My friend Kathryn also got this great shot at the show, and our friend, Quin, was doing professional videography, so stay tuned for some Crooked Hearts video goodness in the future (even sooner if you LIKE us on Facebook!).  I met my bandmate's sweet 9 year old niece for the first time, and the first thing she said was:  "She looks like Katy Perry!"  It was the sweetest thing ever, I almost cried from laughing. I told her it was the best compliment I'd ever received (even if I don't think I'm nearly at Katy's hotness level).  I think it definitely boosted my stage confidence. ;)

Also--this dress!  I found it last week while thrifting,  and it fit like a dream, even though the tag had a much smaller number on it than I usually wear--the bodice has elastic and the halter is adjustable, so to my surprise, when I tried it on just in case, it was perfect.  I squealed a little. Betsey Johnson? Fruit print? 1950s style? It was a match made in heaven--and perfect timing.

Back to the grind now--Mondays are terrible for me, but the rest of the week is smooth sailing.  We have some great blogs in store, so stay tuned!

Amanda

Modern Vintage, v. 2

1940s Style
SHOP THE LOOK 1. Urban Outfitters Cat-Eye Readers 2. ModCloth Work with Me dress 3. Revlon Matte Lipstick in Really Red 4.ASOS peplum top 5. Melie Bianco structured handbag 6.Vigotti black suede peeptoe pumps 7. Forever 21 floral midi skirt 8. Madeline taupe bow wedges

Welcome to another Friday edition of Modern Vintage here on the blog!  I love 1940s silhouettes, but so often , actual 1940s vintage is teeny tiny and not in the best condition (because people actually wore their clothes to death back in the day!). All of the above pieces are 40s-inspired: peplum, peeptoes, a structured bag, cat-eye glasses, a floral midi skirt, and of course, matte red lips to evoke that inner pinup girl.  And did we mention every piece is under $50?  So almost any vintage-lovin' gal can afford to add one (or two...or three?) of these sweet pieces to her wardrobe.

Which piece is your favorite?

Have a fantastic weekend, everyone,
Amanda

Celebrity Looks for Less: Summer Layers

celeb looks banner

I love summer but I definitely think it's the most difficult time of year to dress interestingly.  It just gets too hot to accessorize or add layers.  Here a few celebrity looks for summer with some flare, and of course, their Miskabelle vintage counterparts.

Christa Allen (from Revenge
This is a perfect summer-evening-out look.  I like the skirt and top combo because it gives the option of variety, rather than just pulling on a dress.

Diane Kruger (or as I like to call her, "Pacey's girlfriend")
This look is a great day time event look (perhaps a bridal shower?).  A thin belt gives it some interest without being fussy.  And yay for comfy shoes!  Our version of the dress is a little more flouncy and maybe harder to pull off for just a walk to the local coffee shop.

Jessica Alba (she needs no introduction)
A denim vest is an easy layer to pull on for summer that won't be too hot to handle.  Not sure I'd rock the scarf with it...unless it was a cooler day.

All Miskabelle items are for sale in the shop now!

Outfit Post: Tie Dye

This past weekend my husband and I celebrated 6 years of marriage (I share lots of [maybe too much] personal life stuff on my tumblr  ...if you're interested.  Its mostly about my baby and being a homebody.  Earth shattering stuff).  It was a hot day and we spent a lot of time lounging outdoors.  When it was time to get dressed up for dinner I could barely keep the sweat from my brow and wanted to wear something breezy and fuss-free.  I recently bought this dress and, like a lot of my wardrobe, the reason I purchased it heavily based on the low price tag.  I mean, I was drawn to the tie dye print but questioned the hanker-chief hem line.  But the $5.99 price tag won me over.  I do love the fit too....but part of me feels like the dress could possibly read as "tacky."  Especially with the wrong accessories.  I decided to keep it very 70s and paired it with my fringy sandals, an oversized bag and silver jewelry.

dress:  Ross...once again, the bargains call to me!, sandals:  Minnetonka,
purse: Gap--it was my mom's in the early 2000's, necklace- vintage

My hair is finally growing back!

 Me and my handsome man!

....and this is a typical shot of me.  I tend to be on the awkward side.

So there you have it.  I sort of broke my own 'outfit post requirements' on this post seeing as this look doesn't have much "styling" to it and the dress isn't even vintage.  What can I say, the heat makes me throw out all my rules when it comes to getting dressed.

Outfit Post: Sunday School

Aurora is going to be starting preschool in the fall, just two days a week for a few hours. I volunteered to teach Sunday school for preschoolers this summer to help acclimate her to the classroom and playing with other kids and listening to directions, since she will be in the same room in the fall. This is what I wore for playdoh, circle time, crafts, and jell-o jigglers! I was helping the primary preschool teacher since it was my first time.  I cannot imagine having more than one preschooler in my real life, but having 10 of them was still pretty fun (and crazy!). Of course, Aurora never missed an opportunity to photo bomb an outfit post, either:

Outfit details: fruit print blouse-vintage, wrap skirt-vintage, sandals-vintage

Summer has officially arrived in Virginia, making this top knot-and-bangs look my hot weather staple (adding an occasional turban/headscarf).  I love how my bangs look here, but the truth is, about 50% more of them are pinned back into the ponytail.  My hairstylist went a little crazy with the longer side fringe, so now I'm trying to grow some of it out.  I almost never wear both my hair and bangs down because I think it looks awful, especially at the growing out stage.  But temps are made for up-dos, so it will all be okay.  Grow, hair, grow!

I am wearing head-to-toe vintage for the first time in a while. The skirt is simple enough to really fit any decade, though, and I knotted the top at the waist to modernize it (and give me some definition).  In a total humblebrag, I have to say that after losing some baby weight, the top was a little big for me this summer (I last wore it here)--but I was cool and comfy.

What are your go-to looks in the hot, hot heat?

Amanda

Shop Preview: Unmentionables

I'm guessing when these pieces were worn the first time around they were most likely used in the bedroom or as undergarments.  But these days skin baring is the norm and when styled up right these unmentionables will certainly get you mentioned!

1940's lace trimmed satin camisole and matching skirt

1990's cropped camisole with lace neckline

1970's gauzy embroidered nightgown

Coming to the shop this week!
