Roadtrip: Part 2

Q went to PT school in Philly, but I'd never been there (even in my many years as a Pennsylvanian!), so we made it the second leg of our trip.  We actually used airbnb.com to book a place, and it turned out to be really great.  We were going to take the train, but since Q knew his way around, we decided to drive so he could show me the sights and reminisce about his time there.

We got into Philly early afternoon on Tuesday and headed straight to the Terminal Market for lunch (I loved it there!).  We had to get up our strength--and courage--for the next leg of our trip, our tattoos!  This was my 4th tattoo, but only Q's first.  Of course, he is a strong man and he did awesome, but even I'm still a little nervous before getting a new tattoo, especially in a new place. But we'd done some research and chose a place on South Street, which was also really cool. We went in and showed the guy the designs, and he sent us nearby to get a coffee (The Bean...also really great!) while he worked them up.  We had our drinks and used the bathroom, played on the iPad until it was time to go back. Q went first, and I went second. Mine took a lot longer because it was more detailed and it hurt more than any of my other tats, but it was worth it!
(I'm posting the pic of my tattoo, but not Q's...it's at his discretion. Just ask him to see it. ;)

After tattoos, we went back to our room and rested a bit, then got dressed up for dinner, which we'd be anticipating (it's the only real "plan" we made for our adventure), a fancy vegan dinner at Philly's Vedge. And oh my goodness, it surpassed our highest expectations.  We loved every dish--and in case you're wondering, we had (if you don't care, skip ahead to the photos! ha.):
-the full board appetizer (housemade pickles with rye points and smoked mustard, mixed olives, and peel and eat piri piri beans with fried garlic)
-drinks:  Riesling for Q, a kyoto sour (junmai sake, grapefruit, cucumber, agave, lemon) for me
-gold beets, smoked tofu, avocado, capers, cucumber dill sauce, pumpernickel
-onion soup, pho broth, pickled shiitake, scallion, cilantro, sambal toast
-crispy cauliflower with black vinegar and kimchee mayo
-spring peas with pea tendrils (and something else, but it's not on the veggie menu this week!)
-roasted maitake mushroom, creamy turnips, truffle, black kale jus
-steak-spiced seared tofu, hedgehog mushrooms, kabocha, madeira, walnut picada
and the best part, DESSERT!
me: cheesecake w/ meyer lemon marmalade, clementine juice,  blood orange supremes (pictured below!)
Q: chocolate beignets (it was a Mardi Gras special!)

EVERYTHING was vegan...how amazing is that? I am hungry just reliving this menu! :)

Here is what I wore out to our dinner...I purchased this dress at my favorite consignment (it's new, since they carry some boutique items), since I've wanted a novelty animal print piece for a while. It was perfect and left a lot of arm to show off my tattoo (and keep it from getting rubbed! ow!).

Outfit Details:  horseprint dress-via Current Boutique, tights-random, key necklace-upcycled vintage, booties-BC
Two of the most awesome thing ever: my handsome husband and the vegan cheesecake at Vedge

It was a short, but wonderful trip, and we were, of course, excited to get back to Aurora and see my family again for a short visit.  I didn't want the week to end (Q took the whole week off for my birthday, another extravagant gift!).  But now, it's Wednesday and I think we're back into a groove.

Thanks for all the sweet birthday wishes, and for reading! My 30th year has been pretty great so far.

Roadtrip: Part 1

I have finally come to terms with the fact that Q and I are both back to work/real life. After two weeks of birthday celebrations, we then embarked on a little adventure as my 30th birthday gift--only the best gift ever (after the best party ever!).

The first leg of the trip took us to the Lancaster area, where we stayed in a nearby B&B that we totally recommend. The area is supposedly the top antique spot "in the world." So we shopped (of course), visited the Lancaster Brewery and shared their beer sampler (mmm, strawberry wheat!), lounged around, wrote, ate more good food, and spent lots of time relaxing in our huge jacuzzi tub (hope that isn't TMI, but it was a serious highlight).

Here are a few pics of our room and my day of exploring outfit--we were also gifted with incredible weather the whole time, way warmer than we expected, so everything was pretty much perfect.

Outfit details:  jacket-Mossimo (thrifted), dress-Target (thrifted), tights-random, belt-vintage, shoes-Converse (thrifted!), music note necklace-birthday gift from my dear friend Katie

On our first full day, we drove around to thrift and antique spots, paused at the Brewery for lunch (being vegan in the middle of nowhere is NOT easy, but we managed to enjoy ourselves!), went back to our room to chill out/nap, went to dinner, then wrote for an hour or two in the evening--with the jacuzzi tub as our reward.  The room was beautiful (though the temperature was too warm to really use our fireplace!), breakfast was awesome, and we felt so comfortable and pampered. Q did nothing but spoil me, letting me set the itinerary and buying me whatever my little heart desired (within reason, of course). And no trip would be complete without buying stock for the shop--much of which Jayme will be posting this week!

I love reliving this vacation...stay tuned tomorrow for part 2, the second leg of our trip, which includes tattoos and a fancy-dancy vegan restaurant that we're still dreaming of a week later...

Shop Preview: Leath-ah.

Yeah, there's just something about saying the word "leather" that always makes me think of that lady from Project Runway a few seasons back.  You know, the one that was obsessed with all things "leatha" (<---said in a thick New York accent)?  The one who's significant other was named 'Ratbones'?
That said, I really am a big fan of leather.  It can be worn as chic and classic, or rock and roll, or even 70s bohemian.  We have some leather pieces coming to the shop this week that fit all those categories.

1.  Burgundy bomber-ish jacket—has an inner removable lining which makes it pretty awesome.

2.  Chesnut colored jacket with peplum waist.

3.  Black leather motorcycle vest—complete with chain closure at front and side metal medallions.

4.  Fitted leather blazer.  Timeless perfection.

As always, message us for first dibs!  All items will be priced at $50 or less.

Outfit Post: Jeans for a Coffee Date

This series is brought to you by Levi’s® Curve ID. Find your custom fit at Levi’s® stores or Levi.com

I know it sounds cliche...but as a mom, jeans are pretty much an everyday staple for me.  Most mornings when I get dressed, I open my drawer of shirts and just pull out whatever is on top (usually it's some form of a long sleeve t-shirt and more often than not, it is wrinkled...) and then pull on my favorite jeans.  If I need to leave the house, the ensemble gets an upgrade--some sort of cardigan layered on top of the t-shirt and my favorite vintage cowboy boots (which happen to be the only pair of shoes I own that look great both with skinny jeans tucked in or bootcut/flares overtop).  On this particular day I took that extra step of accessorizing (some chunky rings and layered necklaces) because I was going on a little coffee date with my husband.  I even traded out the cotton shirt for a flowy blouse--because these days a coffee date is the equivalent to a night out on the town pre-baby.  A rare opportunity to be "dressed up."

(It was windy outside...)

sweater: vintage, blouse: super old from Forever21, jeans: Levi's®, boots: vintage, headband:  piece of leather string wrapped around my head multiple times!, crossbody saddle bag: vintage

I think jeans are honestly the best base for a 'date' outfit (even if it's just a coffee date with your husband)...especially ones that hug your body just right.  You know, that pair of jeans you put on and without fail, feel like a million bucks? Also known as that pair of jeans in which your significant other pinches your butt one too many times when you wear them?  (TMI...but c'mon ladies, you know what I'm talking about!)  The other great thing about wearing a great fitting pair of jeans on a coffee date?  People may be so busy checking out your pants that they don't notice what a windblown mess your hair is!

A Party.

pre-party primping
Amanda is a party-planner extraordinaire.  She loves to play host(ess) and is quite good at pulling together handmade decorations, a yummy spread of food and a good group of people to take part in the fun.  For her 30th birthday she did a pretty vintage-y theme.  Lots of flowers, old book pages, lace and vintage fabrics, and framed photos.

These photos were all taken either pre or post party time.... the one downfall of having a great party is that you don't always remember to take photos of your guests!  But Amanda set up a little photobooth using her iPad and a simple backdrop.  All the guests took a turn and then wrote a little note to Amanda on the cards provided.  There were some pretty awesome shots of her friends but we will just share the ones of us (because I guess not everyone wants their face plastered all over the internet...just us self-indulgent bloggers).

At the end of the night we laughed so hard, looking through all the photobooth shots people took.  Then, of course, took our obligatory outfit photos (I posted Amanda's full outfit yesterday, did you see it?).

I would call that a successful 30th birthday party!

Outfit Post: The Birthday Girl

Amanda's party was a success (photos of the bash to come later this week)!  And I must admit one of my favorite parts was her outfit.  A little bit gothic, a little bit whimsy, and all in all very "Amanda".  A corseted lace fit and flare dress paired with fishnet tights, t-strap heels and a velvet bow in her hair?  30th birthday party perfection!  It also helped that she had that pretty birthday gal glow (or I guess that's just her everyday glow!  I just don't get a chance to see it enough, since we live in separate states...).

Dress: Laundry by Shelli Segal, Shoes: Modern Vintage (thrifted),
Tights:  Jessica Simpson, Hair Bow: vintage

Smoky eyes, deep blue nail polish, and I guess the tattoo is kind of an all-the-time accessory :)

Big, wavy hair, topped off with a velvet bow.

End of the night = shoes OFF!

Come back tomorrow to see the part decorations and a look at what I wore to the party!

The Virginia Studio: Before

Oh, this is embarrassing.  Sometimes the studio was cleaner/more organized, but because it is a small place with a lot of inventory, packing stuff, crafting materials and any miscellaneous junk that needed a place to hang out.  Pretty soon, I was working in the living room,, TV room, my bedroom, our upstairs office, ANYWHERE but here.  I knew it was time for a change, so Q proposed that, as part of my 30th birthday gift, he would help me renovate the studio (which also, as you can see in the photo, got some water damage).

The studio was an addition to the house (done poorly).  The wall color is awful, the blinds were disgusting, the light was outdated, one closet was broken, and the carpeting?  Blech.  So there is a lot to do. I had been scouring Pinterest for inspiration, and from there, my handy husband came up with some plans.  We're putting in new flooring, painting, and building a desk (we also fixed the ceiling). I refurbished an old light fixture--it looks amazing!--and started investing in some furniture/decor (via Etsy, Craigslist, ebay, and our thrift!). It's all starting to come together, and I can't WAIT to share the after pictures! Not only will it be my Etsy shop studio, but also a writing/crafting/music studio and a place to just chill out.

Yikes, right?

Thank you for the birthday wishes yesterday! 30 is awesome so far. I am anticipating a visit from my family and a big party this weekend, so I have been cleaning and shopping like a madwoman. I am so excited!  Then Q and I leave for our little roadtrip and will begin the big work of the studio renovation (cleaning/painting/flooring) at the end of next week when we return.

So it's back to work for me! I hope to check in while on the road because, of course, we have a lot of thrifting planned! :)

Outfit Post: Be Mine

Happy Valentine's to you!  Sorry to those of you who saw the title of this post and thought that I was extending an invitation to be my Valentine.  Not only am I already taken (love you Andrew!) but I was actually talking to the sweater I'm wearing in these photos.  You know, it's not often that I find something vintage that I love and KEEP.  Most of the good stuff I put into the shop to sell (lucky you!).  But after posting this United Colors of Benetton 90s cropped sweater I realized it actually looked quite sad on the dress form in the photos.  And it had a small snag on the one arm that I hadn't noticed when I bought it.  So I figured the chances of it selling are quite slim.  And I realized it was the perfect opportunity to keep this gem all to myself.  So to the "deactivated" archives it went, and then immediately pulled on over my chambray top.  Mine, all mine.  : )

Snow!

Time to bust out the faux fur coat...

Hope you all get lots of flowers and candy for Valentine's Day!  If not, why not take solace in a purchase of some new-to-you vintage good-ness?

Shop Preview: Woven Shoes

Am I jumping the gun, listing woven/sandal-like shoes in February?  Maybe.  But I'm hoping Spring will hear my cries and come quick!

1-- Pretty amazing black woven brogues (animal friendly).  These are the kind of shoes that I always LOVE on other people but feel silly wearing them myself.  Very Alexa Chung.  (size 7 but seem to run a bit small)

2--Classic huarache sandals.  The third pair I've found in my size, loved and wanted to keep, and then put in the shop anyway.  I just can't justify keeping these around till summer (and maybe I think the universe will continue sending size 6.5 huarache sandals my way so I can pass these along to some lucky girl).

3--Rounded toe, small wooden heel, ankle strap.  A sort of sandal, a sort of shoe....AND I just tried them on to figure out the size since it wasn't labeled...and they are so cute and perfect looking--you know how some shoes just have a great shape to them?   A little big on me, so I will guess a 7.5 (narrow).

There you have it!  These woven lovelies are coming to the shop this week (along with a few other goodies).

Celebrity Looks for Less: Elizabeth Olsen

Can someone please just wave a magic wand and make me look like Elizabeth Olsen...please?
I must admit, I have always had a girl crush on Mary-Kate and Ashley (ever since I had the singalong video they put out and would belt along to songs like "Peanut Butter and Jelly" and "I Wanna Be President"--when I was probably too old to be watching it...).  But their sister Elizabeth?  Be still my heart. Not only is she gorgeous, but her style is more that of a "real girl" (unlike her sisters' over-the-top, wearing everything but the kitchen sink signature looks).  She definitely has that "vintage" feel to her (designer) outfits.  Some of which are reminiscent to pieces from our shop!  Take a look:

This ivory dress is from her sisters' line, The Row.  Not sure about the choice of footwear...but other than that? PERFECTION.  The dress from our shop is sleeveless but has that same cropped top overlay and delicate beading.

Girly pleated skirt, and menswear blazer?  Seems like a mismatch but looks pretty darn amazing together.  The skirt from our shop is silk, with a quirky print (and while it's not in the blue color scheme of Elizabeth's, I could totally see her wearing it).

Ok.  Now that I've embarrassed myself with all this swooning (and the admission of my penchant for Mary-Kate and Ashley singalong videos), I will wish you all a happy weekend!  And don't forget to check out our $5 bin we've recently added--maybe you'll find something you've been eyeing has been marked down?

Help Me Choose! Road Trip Shoes

My sweet husband had a very ambitious idea for an east coast road trip for my 30th birthday. We had to tone it down a bit (two cities, 3 days), but it is still going to be a huge adventure, including, of course, thrifting and vegan foods! Also: a lot of walking and exploring. As a self-professed lover of heels, the only flats in my closet are my running shoes, a pair of Converse and some boots. I want something comfy and easy to take on and off...so I can put my feet up on the dashboard while we belt out duets (oh yes we did).

all images via Etsy (didn't want to give away the shops and create a bias!)

Which pair is your favorite? I am admittedly leaning toward the booties...but love them all. Help! I am the queen of indecision.

Amanda

Five. Five Dollar. Five Dollar Sale Biiiiiiiin!

(For the record, I hate the Subway $5 footlong ads, but I could not resist the urge to be corny with my title.)

We have over 40 items in a new 5 Dollar Sale Bin section in the shop. We're trying to clear out old inventory to make room for new beauties (spring is just around the corner!).  Check it out--maybe a piece you'd been eyeing made its way over there!  Here are just a few great pieces you can find for a steal...

There are, of course, many more...so stock up on some vintage basics for you or someone you love! And we'll love you forever for helping us out.

Outfit Post: Checkmate

I love bright colors, and neutrals in the brown family, but my go-to color is black.  Not just because it's slimming, but it's just classic and a little sexy and a little rock and roll. Black is my comfort zone, especially when I'm throwing something on to run errands, etc.  This is what I wore to hit up the party store, as we have two VERY big birthdays coming up in the next week!

jacket and top- Mossimo (thrifted), belt-vintage, jeans-Banana Republic (thrifted), lace up wedges-Charlotte Russe

I have been living in my thrifted black Banana Republic skinnies, and I found this buffalo plaid shirt at the thrift last week that has become a new wardrobe staple!  It's a warm winter here in VA, but you still need a jacket. I thrifted this green coat (it's like a big, soft sweatshirt AND the hood is removeable!) that will be great for spring too.

There are many dressy outfits in the works for birthday festivities and roadtrips, but this is a just a little peek at my day-to-day, work-at-home casual wear.

Amanda

P.S. Do you like our shed?  So rustic, am I right?  ;)

Outfit Post: Purple

I was in the mood to wear a skirt this weekend, however, we were going to get our taxes done and I feel like all my skirts were too short and flirty for such a serious occasion.  So I pulled out a dress of a more appropriate length and topped it with my favorite vintage sweater.  Both purple, yes.  But do they look great together?  Not quite.  But alas, we had an appointment to get to and I was stuck.
To redeem the look, I decided to forgo the usual foliage-in-our-yard backdrop and find something cooler.  This old blue building did the trick.  Here I am in various stages of coat-on and closed, coat-open, coat-off.
Hey, squinty eyes.

Pet peeve:  people who constantly pose with their hand on their hip (because yes, we get it, it does make
your arm look thinner).    I promise, I am just trying to show off my awesome ring here.

The face I make when I start to feel awkward that my husband is taking photos of me in front
of a random building (that I think was a locksmith or something).

sweater: vintage, dress: Michael Stars (via discount store),  jacket: old/unknown,
boots:  Frye (thrifted!), belt:  Loft (via discount store)

Funny thing is...now looking at these photos, that dress isn't even all that long.  So yeah, I'm really glad I didn't wear any of my skirts that are even shorter.  Adding to my list of things to look for next time I'm thrifting:  tax-appropriate length skirts.

Shop Preview: Favorite Finds

Any avid thrifter will tell you that part of the joy of thrifting is the thrill of the chase. Some days you will come home empty handed, others you will have two trash bags full of goodies. Recently, for me, I have been unearthing one or two great pieces at a time. These pieces were all found in the same 1 week period at different shops, but they are 4 of my most beloved finds in recent memory.

The Details:  1950s cropped mustard sweater, 1960s tweed cape with faux fur trim, 1950s floral wiggle dress, 1960s cheetah print abstract maxi dress

It was was a gorgeous day, but the lighting is a little dark...will fix that right up before posting this beauties into the shop next week! Off to wrap and post a few more.

Outfit Post: Fancy Pants

I almost called this post "Wallflower".  I didn't realize how much I match the wall until I uploaded them onto my computer.  I think it looks kind of cool--very Zach Braff in Garden State (you know, that scene where he matches the bathroom wallpaper?).  But the real stand out in this outfit are the ah-mazing pants.  A gift from Amanda (of course).  I should've got a close up shot--they are almost like a thick lace material.  Sheer, with little booty shorts sewn in (though, I wore tights underneath to make them a little less risque).  I love the exaggerated shape of them.

Ew, my face here.  I wasn't intending to look so model-y, I think I was just
caught off guard when the camera went off!

pants:  Free People, turtleneck:  old/unknown, scarf/tie:  vintage (really just a
thin piece of silky fabric I found in a bin of vintage scarves and I tied it in a bow), handbag: vintage

I went the obvious route, pairing the gray pants with other shades of black and gray.  The red lip was a necessity to add SOME sort of color.  Oh, and I guess this little gal helped add a pop of color to my outfit too:

I couldn't get that purse out of her tiny baby death grip.

Not sure how else to style these pants.  How would you wear them?
