Holiday Gift Guide: College Co-Ed and L'Artiste

This is the last of our holiday gift guides!  Hopefully you've found some ideas to suit all the unique personalities that make a group of friends (or family!).

The College Co-Ed
Who is she?  Well, it's pretty obvious--she's a student.  Though distracted by classes and searching for her dream job, she attempts to be [comfortably] fashionable.

What to shop for:  Items that are neutral--that can be added to any outfit and still look put-together.  Sure bets include bags large enough for books/lap top/gym clothes/etc., shoes that are cute but comfy enough to hike around campus all day long and anything denim.

The Artist

Who is she?  She's the one who stands out from the crowd at every opportunity--and fashion is no exception.  She's unique in her look and her personality and she brings her art into her everyday life, whether it's interior design or her makeup for the day.  She's serious about her art (and craft), but she also loves new, fun experiences.
What to shop for:   The artist loves pieces that evoke artistry  (obviously).  Graphic prints, unique shapes, and bold colors fill her wardrobe (along with basic black and brown to match it all).  She loves vintage and independent designers because she does NOT want to look like everybody else.

We hope you've enjoyed our gift guides!  Today/tomorrow is the LAST DAY to order to make sure your Miskabelle purchase arrives in time for Christmas (next weekend, people!  can you believe it?!).

Some huge changes will be coming up on our site--and the blog--with the coming of the new year, so stay tuned!  Thank you, again, to our readers and customers.  Your support means to much to us.

Holiday Gift Guides 2010: Tomboy and Working Girl

Welcome to Day 3 of our Holiday Gift Guide!  Today, we shop for the Tomboy and the Working Girl.

The Tomboy

Who is she?  She likes the simple things in life. She's just as comfortable hangin' with the guys as she is with the girls.  She's laidback but adventurous.

What to shop for:  Comfortable and classic--items that play with masculine/feminine.  She needs  to be able to move around easily (flat shoes and stretchy fabrics work well for her wardrobe) and she wants to be able to get dressed in five minutes flat.  Pieces that look like they might come from her husband's or boyfriend's closet are also a good bet.

Working Girl
Who is she?  It's pretty obvious what the working girl has on her mind:  her career.  And while some people might consider her uptight, this girl is smart enough to know that hard work will get her where she wants to be in life.
What to shop for:  Anything that can transition from the office/studio to after-work errands.  This means pieces that are professional yet comfortable.  Structured jackets, comfortable heels, and sleek accessories are the perfect staples of the working girl's wardrobe.  But remember--professional doesn't have to mean boring!  Patterns and colors are more than welcome.

Don't forget all the items we've been showing you in the gift guide are for sale at the Miskabelle shop!  We still have around 100 items that are $5 or $10 in our SALE SALE SALE section....don't miss out!

2010 Holiday Gift Guides: Modern Romance and Travellin' Woman

Today, we peruse the shop for items that will delight The Romantic and the World Traveler.

The Romantic

Who is she?  The romantic falls in love several times a day--sometimes with a boy, sometimes with a pair of shoes, sometimes with the winter light on the sidewalk.  She's feminine and sweet, but that doesn't mean she's not tough. She's not a clueless ingenue either:  she's a modern girl who sometimes wishes she'd lived in another time.

What to shop for:  Pretty and delicate pieces.  Florals and lace are a huge part of her wardrobe, but don't underestimate the power of a slinky little black dress.   She loves looks that recall the 30s and 40s:  dresses, nipped-in waists, and subtle details.

The World Traveler

Who is she?  The world traveler is a girl who is down for anything.  She loves adventure—last minute road trips, spur of the moment get-togethers, and of course, journeys to foreign lands.  This girl doesn’t like to sit still for too long, so she is always sure to be prepared for last minute escapades (Drive all night to the nearest beach?  Hop on the red eye to visit her friends abroad?  Why not?).

What to shop for:  Anything that can be layered—think lightweight jackets, cardigans, hats, scarves. Look for items with an ethnic-feel (fun prints, interesting colors)—pieces that might have a special story behind them.  Also consider items that are comfortable and sturdy (leather bags, boots) for this girl on the go.

Which kind of girl are you?  If you haven't found yourself yet, maybe you will tomorrow! Stay tuned...

2010 Holiday Gift Guides: Bohemian and City Chic

This holiday, we're both on tight budgets.  While we want to get something/s special for our loved ones, it's really tough to stay within the budget and find the perfect gift.  We're hoping to do a lot of vintage and Etsy shopping for one-of-a-kind finds.

Maybe you're in the same boat...do you have a really cool best friend, mom, aunt, cousin, or sister?  Our 2010 Miskabelle Holiday Gift Guide is catering to every type of gal!  Today, we'll share some ideas when shopping for a New Bohemian or a Girl About Town.

The New Bohemian

Who is she?  Laidback and fun, the New Bohemian  has an old soul but a current sensibility. She loves music of all kinds. She'd rather hang out in a field of wildflowers or a room full of old books than a stuffy bar (most of the time). You're more likely to find her knitting, crafting, reading, writing, or painting than you are watching TV or surfing the web. She's a little in love with the world and tends to do a lot of daydreaming.

What to shop for:  Her outfits are inspired by her free spirit:  colors, patterns, and textures make up the bulk of her wardrobe. She's not limited by brands or trends. She wears what's comfortable and what looks good on her.Of course, she loves vintage--especially pieces from the late 60s and early 70s.

The Girl About Town

Who is she?  Your girl-about-town is independent and confident.  She's not afraid to take risks--both in life and in fashion.  By day, she's busting her hump to pursue her dream career (think editor, designer, entrepreneur) and by night she's organizing dinner parties with friends and meeting new business connections for drinks.

What to shop for:  Pieces that are special and will muster up tons of compliments-- yet are classic and chic.  Leather, fur and other rich textures--especially in saturated colors, jewel tones--and the obvious top choice: black.  She likes things that look expensive--which makes vintage a perfect choice because you get "the look" without the outrageous price tag.

Hope you enjoyed our very first gift guide!  Three more to come...stay tuned tomorrow for gift ideas for The Romantic and the World Traveler!

And if you're just not sure how to shop for vintage/clothes, why not purchase a Miskabelle gift certificate?  You can buy $25 or $50 certificates straight from our shop (considering we have over 100 items $10 and under, one certificate can buy several pieces!).

Happy Holidays!

CLOSED. Interview and Giveaway: Salvaged Love

This giveaway is now closed.  Please stay tuned for our next interview and giveaway beginning Friday, December 10th.  Thank you to everyone who entered!  Winner announcement coming later today.

This week we're excited to share with you another great shop with a great name.  And even better, this gal is representing the great state of VA (my home!) I fell in love with her items one day while "pounce"-ing on Etsy, and I know you will too.

Meet Claire, Designer and Owner of Salvaged Love

--What does your life outside of Etsy/blogging look like?

I live in Richmond, Virginia, where I work in the stationery world by day and the craft world by night.  (Hmm, that kind of makes me sound like a superhero…except I can’t fly.)  I have a boyfriend whom I adore (and who cooks for me), the best cats ever, and interesting friends.  I am a vegetarian.  I love going to thrift stores, yard sales and flea markets…especially when I travel, which I also love to do every chance I get.  I am happiest when I am making things.

--Describe yourself (or ask someone else to do it!) in three words.

I had come up with perfectionist & scavenger and was feeling stuck, when I decided to ask my boyfriend, David, what he would choose.  He decided on meticulous, collector & delicate.  Hmm…not too far off.  Interesting.  I think I like his choices better, although my third word would probably not be ‘delicate.’  Maybe…organizer?

--Fall piece you can’t live without:
My black leather Frye boots…paired with skinny jeans, they are a staple of my wardrobe.

--Most recent fashion-related purchase:
My most recent purchase that I ended up having to return was a pair of leopard print kitten heels with a pointed toe that looked like they walked right off the set of Mad Men.  I had ordered them online, which is how I love to buy shoes.  Unfortunately, they were NOT comfortable and had to go back.  The most recent purchase that I have kept is a ruffly fringy gray SUPER soft knit scarf bought at a street fair in New York for $8.  I have been wearing it nonstop since the weather turned cool.

--Do you craft/make anything else outside of what’s in your shop?
I do collage work, using mostly paper, but other things as well.  Like my jewelry, mostly repurposed and scavenged scraps.  I get a lot of my supplies from work, where we like to joke about how green we are because I take home so much stuff that would otherwise be thrown away (and I have been known to dig things out of the trash).  Recent pieces I’ve done have included several custom backdrops for taxidermied birds and multiple pieces for a digital art project called Yet Another Roadside Attraction.

Oh, and I love to knit, but haven’t had time in a while…there are not enough hours in the day!

--Any pet peeves?
When there is still lots of lip gloss left in the tube, but the wand can’t reach it.

--Bad habits?
…....ummm……………………...procrastination.

--Desert-island food?
Cheese pizza

--Three bands/singers you can’t get enough of:
Erin McKeown
Arcade Fire
De la Soul

--Another blog you follow regularly (link us!):
Makes me laugh a lot.

--What made you decide to start a shop?
I have loved and collected vintage jewelry for a long time, as well as all kinds of other found odds and ends…it’s hard for me to pass up anything shiny on the sidewalk.  And I began to design jewelry when I studied Metalsmithing in college.  I would make and alter pieces for myself using things from my collections.  The combination of my two interests, collecting and designing, has evolved into the Salvaged Love style - modern designs using primarily vintage and repurposed materialsThis past spring, I decided spur of the moment to do my first craft show in New York with a friend and sold some pieces.  That really gave me the push to start actively developing my jewelry line, and Etsy seemed like the ideal place to begin showing my work on the web.

--Significance of your shop name?
Salvaged refers to the salvaged nature of many of my materials, and Love, well…I love what I make!  The phrase is also a bit of an homage to Savage Love, the advice column by Dan Savage.

--Favorite item in your shop right now (link us!)

I love this bright blue necklace.  If I were a superhero, this is what I would wear.

Oh, but that's not all....
Claire is giving away a one-of-a-kind piece to one of our lucky readers, just in time for the holidays.

Huge vintage beads are strung from vintage brass bar chain on this lovely one of a kind necklace.  The rich blue-green metallic color looks just like the eye of a peacock feather.
